On Music Discovery and Taste
When people start talking about music recommendation, discovery “technology” and everything else being built on the web for music, I can’t help but think of how many things are at play when someone discovers and enjoys an artist.   To get an idea of what I mean, read the following four posts: How I discovered the Pixies (Zoya) MONDAY’S - BLUE, HAPPY, AND DESPISED (Audio...

This started as an idea while talking to Tom Plunkett, who suggested we merge our business cards and stickers into one.  And so Zoya did, these rock!  Watch for a demo!

Why users should not be CEOs
Wanted to answer these: Tumblr’s Future and why 21 year olds should not be CEOs and Tumblr’s Future The biggest part of running a service like Tumblr (or Hype Machine) is saying no. You may notice that people don’t like hearing no, in response to their very real concerns about a free service.  So the conversations above will only happen more frequently.  David and Marco are out...

Marilyn Manson in New York
29 JAN 2008 New York, NY Hammerstein Ballroom 30 JAN 2008 New York, NY Hammerstein Ballroom I think I’ll just catch the first one - Manson is a killer showman.  The shows are so beautifully produced and setup that it’s worth going even if you don’t totally love his music, though I do, he’s so much fun.

Anyone know about colo?
Marco: We’re considering colocation instead of leased dedicated servers. Brief notes on colocation from my work at Brainlink: - In New York, a pricey-ish but nice colo is Internap, 75 Broad St.  Email me if you want more recommendations, I can dig them up. - If you colo servers you should get some failover firewall gear (or not use firewall gear at all, doable too) and servers that support ALOM...

On the Good Old Days →
…exaggerated beliefs in social decline are widespread — largely because people tend to mistake changes in themselves for changes in the external world. “Our automatic assumption is something real has changed,” Mr. Eibach said. “It takes extra thought to realize that something about your own perspective or the information you’re receiving may have changed.” […] the transition to...

Designing for one person
I was talking with John about his assistive technologies work @ ITP, where him and his students create devices to assist those undergoing rehabilitation/occupational therapy. He mentioned that his favorite method has always been to spend lots of time with the specific person who they are making the device for and really get into their world. This bypasses a lot of other typical design methods...

Discovery On The Web
“It is not about finding a particular book.  Rather, it is about discovering things that I did not know to search for. “…  “All of these sites are great, but the process for discovering content that appeals to me is painstakingly inefficient.  I shouldn’t have to read through hundreds of articles, sites, blogs, and emails to discover the one or two pieces of content...

Tumblr is the richest way to share yourself online...
I don’t know if this is a result of the cool early-adopter community on tumblr or if these tools simply make this possible, but I’ve been having a blast with tumblr. Looking in my dashboard, I can see people excited about being single, married, having relationships, releasing web products, finding great music, sharing their thoughts and unapologetic views of the world. That’s...

KT Tunstall
was great at the Apple Store today. Interestingly, the store did not allow photography, not even with an iPhone. At first I couldn’t let go of the typical thought: “Ah, how lame we can’t take photos, must they control the show THAT much,” but later I noticed something. The crowd was actually listening and into the show, not trying to snap a crappy photo or video, but...

Joel on Software: Undergraduate programming →
I think the solution would be to create a programming-intensive BFA in Software Development—a Julliard for programmers. […] It would be a huge magnet to the talented high school kids who love programming, but can’t get excited about proving theorums. […] You might be able to major in Game Development and work on a significant game title, for example, and that’s how you spend most of your time,...
