This is why I don't read Alley Insider →
The value of this posting is so low that I feel bad for the bytes sacrificed to get the text over to my screen. UPDATE: to save those poor bytes in the future here is an excerpt from the “article”.  It looks like Jakob’s plan worked. :)  When Jakob Lodwick left was fired from Vimeo earlier this month, I immediately predictedthat Lodwick would be working with Tumblr founder David...

Not sure what's up but this sucks, YottaMusic... →
“Thank you for visiting. We’re sorry to announce that Yottamusic is no longer in operation.” For those who haven’t seen the service, it’s the only reason to pay for Rhapsody. YottaMusic let you listen to the entire Rhapsody catalog (if you subscribe, of course) in a super-sleek web interface that worked on PC and Mac.   More details of what it was like, in an older...

Dear Internet, Firefox handles memory better than...
Not a week goes by when I don’t hear someone say or write: ”Firefox sucks, it’s full of memory leaks, I have to restart it like every few hours!!!1” Then we engage in a complex computer science-y analysis of what exactly is behind this.  Bad programming? Feature bloat?  Mozilla sold out to Microsoft? Few realize that Firefox’s ability to open many many tabs, not Firefox’s...

The passion, patience and character with which these guys pursue their vision blows me away. I love many of the ideas behind Last.fm and the fact that they simply created many of them from scratch. Dozens of web companies that recently built what these guys pioneered can’t touch this: those guys may be great people, but it simply isn’t as cool or beautiful (it may be a good business...

2 Hours on the N train and F train
I was riding the subway back from Astoria the other night and had one of the weirdest nights of my life, which I must document here lest it be forgotten in any small way. — taylorlong This too is why I love New York.

What inspires you to do what you do?
Just got an email saying that I inspired a friend to do and continue doing what she does. Made me smile and think: who inspires me? More on this soon.

Anyone using a great Amazon S3 PHP class?
What is it? Share! S3 is a great service but I can’t believe that Amazon spends money to hire an “Amazon EC2 / S3 Evangelist” who travels and sets up meetups, but didn’t get a developer (much smaller investment) to write a good S3 PHP class so people would have an easier time using the service. Maybe they figure that the evangelist will get me so excited about S3 that...

Hype Machine Widgets Launched →
Updated Hype Machine widgets earlier today.  You can now make a widget out of any page on the site and put it on MySpace, Wordpress, Tumblr or anywhere else on the web. They are beautiful and come as images or javascript-based widgets.  Load my Tumblr to see one.

this is important!!
Attention all Facebook members… - via ohboy Attention all Tumblr members. Tumblr is recently becoming very overpopulated, there have been many members complaining that Tumblr is becoming very slow. Records show that the reason is that there are too many non-active Tumblr members and on the other side too many new Tumblr members. We will be sending these posts around to see if the users are...

On Subtle Details: Paging
One thing that subtly sucks about most paging systems on the web can be seen on frequently updated sites. Consider this scenario: You get to page 2 on The Hype Machine, your Tumblr dashboard, or search results in a service like Terraminds. Then you go and do something else for a bit, or you read the page for a little while. When you click to go to page 3, you often see stuff you’ve just...

Aza's Mission
Had a great dinner with Aza Raskin last week. At some point, he shared his mission in the world with me, which is to stop people from cursing at their computers by creating excellent user interfaces for things. He made Songza and founded Humanized Software, which produces Enso, a kickass Quicksilver-like utility for Windows. Mission is progressing well, I love it!

joelaz: Tumblrs, let's chat. Reply by reblog, adding your response to the bottom of this running dialogue. I'll start with a question, but feel free to change topics if you like. What's your latest obsession (aside from Tumblr of course)?
noyb25: hulu.com (just got the beta)
joelaz: I got the invite to Hulu a week or two ago. I was into it for a few days, but less excited about it now. Not sure why.
anthony v: hulu.com makes me feel like it's ok to watch the same things I wouldn't watch on TV, because they are on the web. This is a bit insidious. :P

Policy Schmolicy?
People are highly automatic machines, and most don’t know it. They do awesome things just as automatically as they do the objectionable things. Having it any other way doesn’t work: that way, you are making too many decisions too quickly, few of which are important. You can put all this machinery to work for you. Look at all decisions in perspective of things you want to create,...

On Listening
I started this Tumblr in part to have a place where I can publicly acknowledge people in my life that inspire me to be more. I love extrordinary listeners. They create an amazing space, where you get to share yourself and then feel understood. And while everyone agrees on how great that is, *really* listening is not always easy. Ken Auletta, John Heilemann and Art Chang inspire me to listen....

Gizmodo Compares Amazon MP3 Store and Walmart (But... →
The Walmart store is so poorly executed that even comparing the two is a debatable use of people’s time, so I am not sure why Gizmodo wrote about this. The fact that they implemented their site to only work with IE/ActiveX and even then to work slowly, speaks of the outcome of this “showdown”. If your job is to get market share from iTunes and sell MP3s (Walmart seems serious...

03 Dec 2007 06:11:13 GMT Source: Tumblr NEW YORK, Dec 3 (Tumblr) - A cutesplosion measuring 8.0 on the Flickr scale shook the dashboards of hundreds of users on the Internet site Tumblr late Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, unrest or profile data loss, the Tumblr Information Agency said.
